4-H Judges Training

by Aliesa Woods, 4-H Youth Development Agent

Judging is a vital part of the county fair educational process. Judges are part of a teaching team of volunteer leaders, parents and Extension staff. The judge is the link between the 4-H project, the 4-H member and a standard of performance.

Participation in county fairs is an opportunity and privilege for 4-H members. If they choose to participate, they are in effect asking for an adult to give his or her opinion regarding the quality of their exhibit or participation.

This past weekend a fair judges training was held in Osborne. In the morning Karen Blakeslee, KSU Extension Specialist presented a session for foods judges. Volunteers and staff provided canned items and baked goods for participant to practice their judging skills.

The afternoon focused on the Fiber Arts project and was led by Heidi Doane and Tonya Kuhn. Many quilts which are a part of fiber arts were available for participants to view workmanship styles and finishes.

A big thanks to all of those who attended that signed up to serve as fair judges and for those who provide project meetings for our youth. You are indeed a valuable asset to our program!
